Frequently Asked Questions for DJs
Q: Does the live feed work yet?
I'm afraid not.
Q: How do I play music from my ipod or laptop?
There's an audio cable on the desk above the turntables. Plug this into the headphone jack on your ipod or personal computer, hit the yellow button beneath the slider marker "Line In" on the board, and crank that volume up.
Q: I'm not normally the last show of the day, but the person who is hasn't shown up. How do I lock up for the night?
Firstly, make sure that automation is on (turn on the computer and run Simian if it's off, then turn on the "Automation" track on the audio board). Nextly, put away all the CDs, sign out, turn off all the lights, set the "automation" away message on the AIM computer, and lock the door behind you as you leave.
Q: My favorite band just released a new CD! Can you guys get it for the station?
We don't actually buy our CDs or choose which ones to get. Artists, release groups, and record companies send us CDs for free, which is great because otherwise we wouldn't have very many. We can't, however, choose what we do and don't get.
Q: What can I play / say on air?
There's a list in the station. Beyond this, use your best judgement. If you wouldn't feel comfortable saying it to your elderly grandmother, you probably shouldn't say it on air. Because the grandmothers of Meadville are listening.
Q: What about the minidisk player?
This, we will not speak of.
Q: Can I play vinyl?
Absolutely! See an exec board member for a tutorial about turn table usage.
Q: Why do I have to do playlists?
Part of the reason that we get free CDs delivered to us is because we report back about which CDs we play. That's how they generate all those college radio charts you see in Rolling Stone and such. We compile the playlists into weekly charts.
Q: I have a question that was not addressed on this list of so-called frequently asked questions. This is either an oversight on your part, or my question is not so frequent after all.
Email warc@allegheny.edu, or step in during someone's office hours, and your concerns will be addressed!
